The Graduate Martha

Martha & Sawyer

My Martha graduated from college at the end of May. For those of you who don’t know, her real name is Marli Shon. You’re probably wondering why, when she has a cool name like Marli Shon, do I call her Martha? Marli has had a million nicknames in her lifetime but the one that stuck for me is of course from a movie. One of her favorites as a little kid, “Dennis the Menace”.

It’s all because of that crotchity Mr. Wilson. For some reason we always repeated one of our favorite lines of his, “MARTHA!!! Where are the GD garden lanterns?” I have no idea why this struck us as funny or why we eventually started calling Marli Martha because of it but we did. Much to the chagrin of my mother. She hates it when we call her Martha. Which just makes us do it all the more.

Anyway, Martha did it! Graduated from Doane College with a degree in Fine Arts. It’s hard to believe it’s been four years since she headed off to college with a track scholarship (two-time State Champion in the Pole Vault) and enough clothes for five dorm room closets.

I remember her first report home to me, “Kerri! My roommate has a cape and a light saber!!” Oh my gosh, memories came flooding back of my first day at UNL when I walked in my dorm room and my assigned roommate informed me that I could move out if I wanted to. You bet I did. And so did Martha. Thank goodness she found an amazing roommate who I know will be her friend for the rest of her life.

Graduation Day arrived somewhat dark and gloomy and like almost every other college in Nebraska the ceremonies were forced indoors. At least it wasn’t sleeting, which it had done the week before, but Martha was bummed. Her school is known for it’s beautiful campus and she had been looking forward to graduating in their amazing outdoor ampitheater but it wasn’t meant to be. Indoor ceremonies also meant she was only allowed four tickets. So that meant her parents, sister and brother-in-law so I never actually got to watch her walk across that stage and get her diploma.

But we didn’t, however, need tickets for her graduation party afterwards. She and her graduating sorority sisters had a group reception at one of the local bars. When I walked in and saw her holding her new, baby niece Sawyer, I of course had to say it… “You have a baby… in a bar!” a la Reese Witherspoon in “Sweet Home Alabama”. Sawyer was duded up in her best little gypsy outfit in honor of her Aunt Martha.

Her sweet little sandals were the talk of the party.

This was also the same weekend that I had discovered a new app for my phone. I had just downloaded the “A Beautiful Mess” app and had all kinds of fun with it at the party. Like this …

Bored Sawyer

I just couldn’t resist.

As the party was ending we realized we hadn’t gotten any real graduation pictures. So Martha ran and got her cap and gown out of the car and we headed out to the lovely alley behind the bar and I had to decide on where to pose my subjects, beside the huge, industrial air conditioning units or next to the aromatic overflowing dumpster. Classy. Oh well, that’s why there’s a crop tool.

Congrats Martha! So very proud of you!
