The Long Road Home

Monday, August 12th, 2013

In my mind it is technically still “this week”. A few days ago I promised that I would get us out of Texas this week, and like I said, in my mind Sunday night is the last day of the week so “technically” I’m keeping my promise. God spent Sunday resting after that long week of hard work unfortunately we spent Sunday driving, and there is never a whole lot of rest during a 13 hour road trip. You might nap throughout the day or sleep the entire trip (like Marli) but it’s never really a restful sleep (although I can’t vouch for Marli).

Adventures At Ikea

16 Texas

No trip to Texas is complete without a visit to Ikea. Especially when you come from an Ikea-barren state like Nebraska. Kelli of course had a list of items she wanted to buy, I truly needed nothing. But that’s the thing about Ikea, you go in needing nothing and come out $100 later with all kinds of something.

10 Texas

The next morning was “Graduation Day!”. Saylor would be graduating from the 5th grade which means next year she will be in Middle School… watch out world! Or at the very least… watch out Texas! This would be my third time attending the Girlies “end-of-the-year-assembly” at Winkley Elementary and I get such a kick out of it every time.

Southbound and Down

1 Texas

Hey there, anyone interested in taking a trip down south with me? If not, stop reading now, because we are headed to the land of “Ya’ll” where you have to shower three times a day due to the heat and no matter what kind of pop you order they give you a Dr. Pepper.

The Graduate Martha

Martha & Sawyer

My Martha graduated from college at the end of May. For those of you who don’t know, her real name is Marli Shon. You’re probably wondering why, when she has a cool name like Marli Shon, do I call her Martha? Marli has had a million nicknames in her lifetime but the one that stuck for me is of course from a movie. One of her favorites as a little kid, “Dennis the Menace”.

Pool Bucket 1

My full-time job, which is much too full-time for my taste, is at a small-town newspaper. The town’s population is around 7,800 and we also cover around 12 other small towns in the surrounding area. Last I checked we were the smallest daily newspaper in Nebraska. Working at a small-town newspaper is what you would call an interesting job, especially in this neck of the woods. Our area seems to specialize in crazy. After all, we broke the story of the Waco Bank Robber. The Waco Bank Robber was a teenage girl who decided one afternoon to steal a car, rob her local bank, go home and videotape herself bragging about it AND THEN POST IT TO YOUTUBE!!! We hit national news with that one. It’s a bit surreal to suddenly have an email in your inbox from CNN asking permission to run our small-time video.

Here Come The Clampett’s

Remember that awesome “Mad Men” sectional I posted about a while back? The one my sister bought to replace her very old, still amazingly white sofa? Well it recently made it’s appearance at it’s temporary resting place in my parents garage. Two rather large piles of orange and turquoise furniture really classed up the joint, at least for a few weeks. I knew it would sit there comfortably for only a short time because the Old Man can’t handle stuff sitting around his house. The daily newspaper is out in the dumpster some ten minutes after he finishes reading it and one of his biggest pet peeves is the rather large volume of catalogs my mother has laying around the house at all times. I kind of take after him when it comes to the catalog issue. My catalogs used to go directly from my mailbox into the trash can, that is until our local Post Office took the trash cans away, that’s one of my pet peeves.

Tip Top Grad Toppers

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

Next up on the graduation project list was cupcake toppers. Melissa had mentioned several months ago that her high school grad, Maelyn (one of my sweet little Huebert cousins) wanted to go with cupcakes instead of cake for her graduation party. Melissa asked if I could make her some cupcake toppers.

Radio Silence

Saturday, May 25th, 2013

If there is anyone out there still checking my blog to see what’s new, I am so sorry. This blog stuff is work. I have officially fallen behind. The past couple of weeks have been filled with projects and then there’s that pesky full-time job that takes up way too much of my time. On top of that, my house is a disaster since we raided it once again to decorate for an event and everything is still just sitting in the same piles that they were returned in. If I’m being honest, some of those piles were returned after Prom and that was officially a month ago. Just check out my poor living room chair, it’s officially become a junk holder.

What a mess

Shoppin’ ‘The Mart’

Down the aisle

On the last day of my sister’s visit home to good ol’ Nebraska the family decided to load up and head to Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha. The Newmans were on a quest for some new living room furniture, and all agreed this purchase was long overdue.
