On July 17, 2017 eight teams of Huebert cousins raced around Mahoney State Park in pursuit of  a million dol… oops… that’s actually Phil’s line… in pursuit of two chintzy, homemade trophy’s and most importantly bragging rights until the next reunion on ‘The Amazing Race Huebert Edition Season Two’.

Two months. I made it two months. It’s a record actually. I kept a New Year’s Resolution for two months. Technically a little over two months if you’re keeping track. You may remember that resolution, the one that said I was going to blog at least once a week from here on out. Well it lasted two months and then I descended into “March Madness”.

Everything Music

It’s early Sunday afternoon and I’m fighting a bit of a “musical hangover”. This type of hangover doesn’t come with a pounding headache or numerous trips to the bathroom (I know, a lovely analogy for an opening paragraph) but instead with snippits of various songs running through my head and thoughts of sheer disbelief. How is it possible that two small communities have produced so many talented kids?

2016: The New Year Awakens

It was exactly a week ago. Just one week ago today I was sitting in this very same recliner, the one in desperate need of recovering, tip-tap-tapping away on my iPad making promises I sincerely hoped to keep (by the way, week two post two for all you naysayers out there) and in the back of my mind planning on doing nothing the next day except sleeping in and possibly entertaining the thought of taking my Christmas decorations down. Little did I know what was in store for me with the dawning of the new year.

Hello 2016

So I’m sitting here in the waning hours of 2015 thinking about what a horrible blogger I’ve become. I just cracked open my iPad case for the first time in almost two months and realized my last post was in October… AND IT WAS ABOUT AN EVENT THAT HAPPENED IN JULY!!!! So bad. So, so bad.

This is Mahoney State Park. (Cue the dramatic background music in your mind) Located near Ashland, Nebraska just off I-80. This beautiful park is nestled among 700 acres along the picturesque Platte River. (It wasn’t in our budget to rent a helicopter and take a bunch of those all-important sweeping overhead shots so this will have to do…)

Hueberts Take Mahoney

Before the snow starts to fly in my neck of the woods I thought it might be a good idea to share our Huebert Family Summer Adventure with all of you out there in the blogosphere.

Some of you may remember my “Mahoney Day” post from way back in July of 2014. You know, the one describing the complete and total panic attack that I undergo every three years when it’s time to reserve cabins at Mahoney State Park for our Huebert Family Reunion. Well the time had come. On the second to the last weekend of July the Battle Cry of the Hueberts was sounded and family members began to converge on the banks of the Platte River to “TAKE MAHONEY STATE PARK!!!”

Okay, so here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the final installment of our Texan Adventure. It’s taken me a while to get here so let’s hope I can still remember how it all went down.

Our final day in Texas dawned just like the rest of them, overcast and dreary. We had hoped to wait out the weather, surely if we gave it a few days the sun would decide to come out. I mean we were in Texas… I was starting to feel like that one chic in the Swiffer commercials – “Sun where are you?!” We still had hopes we would find it on Galveston Island. I mean, it’s an island surrounded by ocean, isn’t the sun a requirement?

Mexican Fiesta

Well, here I am again, ready to report on Day Four of our Texan Adventure. I had really planned on getting us all out of Texas before the end of January but once again I have failed miserably. It’s been a month, I do believe we have overstayed our welcome at the Newman Hacienda.

So, without further ado, Day Four. In case you hadn’t noticed, the title of this post is once again food related. No traditional German delicacies this time around, this time we went south of the border. Practically the minute we walked in the house a request was made for my brother-in-law Steve’s famous enchiladas. We knew when we planned out the week that Steve would need the majority of a day to prepare our Mexican Fiesta so we didn’t really plan any major outings. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t go on any outings. Once again we divided up Mennonite style, the boys headed off to deal with some vehicle issues and we of course headed off for some more shopping.

Food Coma

For the first time in my life I awoke on New Year’s Eve Day to the same amazing aroma as all of my other Mennonite brethren. That would be the smell of New Year’s Cookies wafting from the direction of my sister’s kitchen. What’s a New Year’s Cookie you ask? Well, look up above, see those little fried dough balls full of raisins… those are New Year’s Cookies, and they haven’t even reached their height of amazingness yet, that happens …. NOW…
