A Bouquet of Newly Sharpened Pencils

August 21st, 2013

1 Bouquet of pencils

It’s that time of year again, Back-To-School time. All the little kiddos in my neck of the woods filled their backpacks and bags full of fresh school supplies and headed back to school last week. The thought of fresh school supplies made me think of the line in one of my favorite movies, “You’ve Got Mail”.

Joe Fox and Kathleen Kelly are “sending their thoughts out into the void” when Joe writes: “Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms.” All of their exchanges were so brilliantly written but this one has always stuck in my head so I made a little printable of it, for your printing pleasure.

And then I went ahead and printed one out to add to my little “Seasonal Coat Closet” display.

The frame for the printable was a Shed Sale find. It was nice and beat up and a bit crazed and when I painted it pencil yellow it looked even better.

I changed out my chalk board as well.

And then scrounged up a few school-themed odds and ends from around the house.

That text book with the cute design was given to me many, many years ago by my third grade teacher Mrs. Amy Friesen. Mrs. Friesen was also my next door neighbor growing up (she still lives next door to my folks) and she knew I loved to read and one summer she gave me a stack of old reading text books that I then spent the summer devouring. I’ve always credited her for my love of reading.

I found that little, metal “See and Spell” toy at an antique shop in Muskogee, Okla. while attending a Bethel College Volleyball game. My niece Morgan played volleyball for Bethel and I really miss all of those weekend volleyball tournaments. Number one because I love volleyball and number two because no matter where we went I usually found an antique shop and killed time between games searching for treasures.

I got the giant light bulb at an antique shop in Georgetown, Texas and regret not buying more. They had a whole basket of them for $5 each. That wasn’t a very “bright idea” passing those up.

So “Happy Back-To-School” to all of you students, teachers and parents and remember Christmas vacation is just around the corner.
