Hello Kriso: Poor Thanksgiving

havest tote

Poor Thanksgiving, it’s smooshed between the two biggest holidays of the year and doesn’t get the respect it deserves. People tend to go straight from the Halloween candy to the Christmas lights totally ignoring the fact that there’s a perfectly good holiday in-between. I read somewhere the other day that an elf dies every time a tree is lit before Thanksgiving. If that is the case I think the North Pole is running low on elves.

Give Thanks

‘Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and all through the house not a creature was stirring (actually there probably will be some stirring I’m a bit of a restless sleeper) not even a mouse (I would hope not, there had better not be a mouse in my house!) I was about to get snuggled all warm in my bed when I realized “Crap! I forgot to write my Thanksgiving post!” as I put my hands to my head.

Southern Fried Parties: Things Are Looking Grimm

3 Grimm sign

Previously on Southern Fried parties… a group of innocent and unsuspecting family members headed down south to offer up their party prep services to a very ambitious and somewhat demanding amateur party planner. Pumpkins were painted, cottages constructed and the party planners equally ambitious husband toiled away into the wee small hours of the night building one spooky Enchanted Forest.

Glowing bones

Ba da beep beep beep. Ba da beep beep beep. We interrupt your regularly scheduled posts (cough, cough, cough, cue the eyeroll, like there’s such a thing as a regularly scheduled posts in my world) to bring you a special spooky edition of “Southern Fried Parties”. I’ve decided it might be a good idea to share my recent Halloween adventure with all of you before you slip into a turkey coma following your Thanksgiving meal.

Marc on the pile

It was an ordinary Monday night in late August when I took one more step toward my life-long goal of becoming an “American Picker”. The tip had come from my sister Kelli several months earlier. She was in the process of being a dutiful farm wife (chuckle, chuckle, I can just see my brother-in-law rolling his eyes at my decision to use the word “dutiful” in describing Kelli) by helping Marc move irrigation pipe in one of his fields down by the creek. It was then that she spied an old wooden barn door laying along the creek bank. Apparently an area farmer was using this secluded part of the creek to dispose of unwanted wood from his outbuildings.

Greetings From Room 3

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013

My good friend Tami is one of two Kindergarten teachers here in my little burg and she so loved my “Never Stop Learning” chalkboard that she asked to borrow it for her class picture. I agreed to loan it to her but only if I got a copy of the photo… so here it is.

Greeting from Room 3

As she said in her email, it was no easy task getting 15 Kindergartners to smile and look at the camera at the same time but they did their best. Looks pretty good to me. And by the way, wouldn’t you have just loved to have Miss Tami as your Kindergarten teacher? She’s just as sweet as she looks. I myself had a very scary Kindergarten teacher, as you can tell, it left an impression.

Since I had several people tell me they loved this particular chalkboard I’ve decided to turn it into a printable for you to download and enjoy.

The Week (or two) In Digital Doodles – July 2-15

Sunday, November 10th, 2013

This post really shouldn’t be called “This Week in Digital Doodles” because it actually includes doodles from several weeks and those several weeks took place several months ago. Oh well, what can I say, I’m playing catch-up. This post includes several pics from sister Kris’ visit home in July and Troy and Sara’s beautiful wedding.

barn 2

I did something a few months back that I hadn’t done in years, I hit up an auction. Every couple of weeks I start jonesing for an antique fix to appease this “junking sickness” of mine, usually I just hit an antique store or go to a sale. An auction is a whole ‘nother beast. I mean it’s a competition really. You’re competing for ownership and generally the one with the most money wins. And as someone who can never be called “the one with the most money” it can sometimes get downright depressing. To sit there and watch something you’ve been coveting go to someone else because they have more cash on hand… irritating. Luckily my taste runs to the cheap side and I’m usually looking for junky, small things that I can eventually fix up and turn into something else.

Bachelorette 2

I thought I was done with wedding projects but I guess not. Technically I guess this project would be labeled as “wedding adjacent”. My sister’s niece Paige was the Matron of Honor at the upcoming wedding of one of her good friends, thus putting her in charge of the Bachelorette party. Paige called me up and asked if I could quickly come up with some invites for her. A pretty simple job since she didn’t really have any specifications on what they should look like, they should “just be cool.” So I did my best.

LeVina Close Up

My final wedding project of the summer was a recipe poster for Caitlin and Daniel’s wedding. Caitlin and her mom Judy planned on serving sour cream cookies at the wedding, correction, LaVina’s Sour Cream Cookies.
