Project Progress Report

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

So this is meant to make me feel a little better about this week. I have no completed projects to post so I thought I would share a “Progress Report” of sorts. It seems like I constantly have four to five projects in various states of completion.

This week those projects included a Family Poster, T-Shirt color separations, a wedding invitation and a prom ticket design. Hopefully I can dig in and finish some of these over the weekend.

My whole life Wednesday has always been “Church Night”. It started with Midweek and then moved on to Children’s Choir. Children’s Choir no longer exists at my church. It’s hard to believe that they ever stuck a group of little kids up in the choir loft for an entire Sunday morning service. I mean how many parents must have stormed out of the sanctuary following service to give their kid a lecture for acting up in front of the whole congregation?

An amazing thing happened to me today. I drove home from work in the daylight! I haven’t seen daylight on my way home in months. I work odd hours at my dayjob (or I guess I should call it my midday-into-night-job) and last week was one of my three most dreaded weeks of the year. It’s a week that comes around three times every school year, Fall, Winter and Spring. This time it was “Spring Sports Section Week”.

It’s a week involving color adjusting a hundred or so individual mug shots of high school athletes from eleven area schools and making sure you have the right name on each picture because believe you me if you don’t you will hear about it. It’s finding and cutting out at least thirty shots of individual athletes in action, making sure the names in the cutlines under each team photo match the number of faces in a row, typing up team schedules and then somehow fitting all of the information and images onto 16 pages of newsprint along with a hundred or so ads.

Needless to say, my creativity and all creative projects came screeching to a halt last week. I have nothing colorful and bright to share from the previous week just a bunch of black and white newsprint and that makes me a bit sad. Ah, but it is a new week and it’s bound to be an improvement over the last, after all, I’ve already caught a little glimpse of daylight.

Spring Has Sprung (at least in my house anyway)

Saturday, March 16th, 2013

Spring sprang in my house yesterday. Even though there are still patches of snow on my yard I decided I was sick of looking at my winter decor and then realized Easter is only a few weeks away so it was time to get some springy stuff out. That old rain gauge was one of my purchases at that really cool antique shop in Georgetown, Texas.

Some Easter chalk art. “I say a hip, hop, hippity, hop”, that’s my attempt at rapping.

Stone Letters

I’m in charge of decorating five different bulletin boards located at all of the entrances at my church. I’ve been doing it for several years and it has given me a creative outlet. I started out doing boards for the different holidays and seasons but found it was too hard to keep up. Of course my mother always tells me I could keep up just fine if I didn’t put so much work into them, but what’s the point of doing something if you don’t do it all the way? (more…)

Pastor Andrea (one of my partners in crime in the youth room re-design, that sounds kinda bad referring to a pastor as a partner in crime, but oh well) recently asked me to be a part of the Lent committee at my church. One of the main jobs they had in store for me was creating a banner that would hang above the choir loft in our sanctuary with our Lenten theme on it.

St. Patrick's Day printables

Top O’ the Mornin’ to ya! Just wanted to share a couple of St. Paddy’s Day printables courtesy of my very talented sister. I’m hoping she sends me a photo of her current St. Patrick’s Day decor so I can share it with you. She does the coolest mantles. Oh how I wish I had a mantle to decorate.

Spring Pinwheels

Saturday, March 2nd, 2013

Temps in the mid ’40s made it feel pretty Spring-like today so it was time for the pinwheels to return to their toolbox home. I made the pinwheels last summer as table decor for my church’s conference dinner. I couldn’t bear to throw them away but I didn’t know what to do with them all, it’s hard to store them without crushing them. And then I thought of my old red toolbox that lives on top of a cupboard in my bathroom. I’m always looking for stuff to fill that toolbox. I didn’t know how the pastel colors would look with the red but I kinda like it.

So they will live in the bathroom (doesn’t that sound like a fun place to live… not) until Christmas rolls around again and that tool box will start begging for some holiday greenery.
