A few weeks before Christmas I was contacted by a native of my hometown who now lives in Indiana. She had been home to visit family over the Thanksgiving holiday and had been checking out the recently renovated youth room that I worked on and really liked one of the posters I had designed. She was trying to come up with a unique Christmas gift idea for her kids and my poster had given her an idea. (more…)

Hit a new antique store in Georgetown, TX. Tons and tons of “smalls” (as the ‘American Pickers’ would say) Too much to even look at.

V-Day Decor

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

One of the first things I do when visiting my sister is make a round of the house to check out her latest decor. I was lucky to hit a holiday this time. Although she always has cool and unusual decor all year round. I’m always jealous of her mantle because I don’t have one to decorate. She used up almost an entire bottle of turquoise glitter glittering that branch. She and the girls cut out and stitched the heart garland, the girls each showed me the hearts they made. The glittered birds we both created for our niece’s wedding last January and she made the print of V-Day words in the red frame. The globe is the one that got away for me. We were antiquing on a previous visit and I spotted it first and pointed it out and she called dibs while I was still thinking on it. I’m a good sister and let her have it. She told me Saylor thought it looked dumb up on the mantle until she made the felt bunting and hung it on the globe. I said “Of course the bunting looks awesome because it reminds me of the scene in ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ when Meg Ryan gets to New York for Valentine’s Day and they show the store window of the travel agency with the rotating globe and the string of paper hearts around it.” Of course by the time I was done making the statement Kris was saying the same thing over the top of me. We are weird that way.

Time for a trek to Texas! I never look forward to that 13 hour drive but end up doing it at least twice a year, sometimes more. My younger sister and her family live in Leander, which is basically a suburb of Austin. We either go just for a visit, to work on an ongoing remodeling project or to kidnap my nieces Saylor and Kambel and take them back to Nebraska with us. My traveling companions this time around are my parents.

Oklahoma City is our half-way point and my mothers favorite part of the trip, the van always seems to find it’s way to the Riverwind Casino on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. The majority of my family are slot machine junkies, my mom being the worst of us all. We usually stop and play for a couple of hours. It breaks up the trip, and sometimes we even win some gas money. It’s not like we are high rollers or anything, we play the penny slots. And I, along with being a font snob, am also a slot machine snob. I only play the machines with cute graphics. None of those ‘Pharaohs Treasures’ or ‘Pompeii’ old school machines for me. They have to have cute, cartoony graphics or be based on a ’50’s T.V. show, ‘Dean Martin’s Wild Party’ is my all-time favorite but Dean hasn’t been too kind to me lately, time for something new.

Potato Salad 3

So this post should really be called “Homemade Holiday Part 2 – Mom’s Gift”. Again, I spotted something I loved on Pinterest and stole the idea. It was such perfection for my mother. They were currently working on remodeling their kitchen and had told me I would be in charge of finding artwork for the walls so I decided to make her something.

Homemade Holiday

Tuesday, January 1st, 2013

While wondering how I was going to scrape together enough money to buy Christmas gifts this year a light bulb went off in my head “Why not make all of my gifts! Duh!” My sister has been telling me she would be happy with anything I made her for years but I always felt like I had to go the store bought route. This year I decided no matter what I was going to carve out the time to make my family their Christmas gifts. I completed about half of that goal. I made gifts for my two sisters, my Mom and my two nieces. The men proved a little more difficult, I could think of something to make for my Dad but that was about it. In the end I ran out of time and ended up buying a gift for my Dad and all the other guys.

The first project started out as an idea for my niece Morgan who was recently married and living in her first home, I decided to help her decorate it. An image on Pinterest had caught my eye and I decided to do something similar. First I had to call her new husband in Kansas and beg for some barn wood, which he basically just went out to one of his barns and pried from a wall. Morgan then brought it to me on one of her trips home not knowing it would just be returning to her house after Christmas.
